Cataracts develop when natural proteins produced by the eye collect on the eye’s lens over time, causing natural clouding of the lens as a person ages. This results in blurry vision, and many patients have difficulty reading, seeing at night, and distinguishing colors. Although cataracts are unpreventable and irreversible, the talented doctors at Pocono Eye Associates, Inc. provide ophthalmology services to treat patients with cataracts.
Until recently, nearly everyone received the same type of Intra Ocular Lens Implant (IOL) for cataracts, but today, there are advanced lens choices that offer more options than ever before. New IOLs, such as Acrysof® IQ Restor® Multifocal, can treat cataracts and correct additional vision problems, offering excellent near, intermediate, and distance vision—even without glasses or contacts.
Pocono Eye Associates, Inc. also offers the Acrysof® IQ Toric IOL for correcting astigmatism. This advanced monofocal lens is designed to correct both cataracts and astigmatism at the time of surgery, for clear distance vision without the need for glasses. However, most patients still need corrective lenses for reading.
Cataract surgery is a quick outpatient procedure that removes the cloudy natural lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens. To begin the surgery, patients are given a light sedative and anesthetic eye drops. When the eye is completely numb, the doctor places an eyelid holder to keep the eye open. Next, the doctor makes a tiny incision in the eye and removes the lens. The IOL is then inserted and rotated it into place. Stitches are usually not necessary since the incision is self-sealing.
IOLs (intraocular lenses) can be a life-changing option for cataract patients since they replace the clouded natural lens with a state-of-the-art artificial one. IOLs mimic the natural lens by bending and flexing to refract light onto the retina. We offer numerous types of IOLs, and your doctor can help you find the right one for your eyes so you can once again have crisp, clear vision.
